Word Made Flesh Icon of Virgin Mary is a hand-painted Orthodox icon of the mystery of the Incarnation. In Russian tradition this image is known as Slovo Plot Byst, and historically also as the Albazinskaya icon of the Mother of God. Its title comes from the Gospel of John: ?And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us? (John 1:14).
This icon does not only show the Mother of God as a figure of devotion. It reveals the central Christian mystery: the invisible God, the eternal Word, took human flesh in the womb of the Virgin Mary for the salvation of the world. For this reason the icon is especially associated with prayer for motherhood, pregnancy, childbirth, and the protection of infants.
Word Made Flesh Icon of Virgin Mary – Albazinskaya Icon
The Word Made Flesh icon belongs to the broad family of the Sign or Platytera icons, yet it has its own distinctive form. In the classic Sign icon, the Mother of God is usually shown with her hands raised in the Orans gesture. In this Albazinskaya image, her hands are lowered and gently support her womb, pointing to the Child who is present within her.
The composition is therefore deeply maternal and deeply theological at the same time. The Mother of God does not simply hold the Christ Child after His birth. She bears Him within herself as the living tabernacle of the Word. The image proclaims that the one born of her is not only a human child, but Christ Emmanuel, God with us.
Iconography of the Incarnation
The Mother of God is shown half-length. Her hands support her womb with tenderness, protection, and reverent awe. At the center of the icon, on the level of her breast and womb, is a red circular or oval medallion. This medallion symbolizes the pure womb of the Theotokos, the place where the uncontainable God was contained.
Inside the medallion stands Christ Emmanuel. He is not shown as a helpless newborn, but as the pre-eternal Word of God. His right hand is raised in blessing, and His left hand holds His garment. His face, though childlike, expresses peace, wisdom, and divine majesty.
On both sides of the Mother of God are seraphim with fiery red or brown wings. These highest angelic powers stand in awe before the mystery of the Incarnation. Their presence recalls the liturgical praise of the Mother of God as more honorable than the cherubim and more glorious beyond compare than the seraphim.
Gold Ornament and Enamel-Style Details
The wide fields of this hand-painted icon are richly decorated. The ornament is made as a relief pattern in the gesso and then covered with 23K gold leaf (960 purity). The winding floral forms recall the Tree of Life and the beauty of paradise. When light touches the raised gold ornament, the surface becomes especially festive and solemn.
The corners of the icon include painted enamel-style floral details in blue and red tones. These details do not distract from the central image; they frame the mystery of the Incarnation with the beauty and order of the heavenly Kingdom.
Prayer Before the Word Made Flesh Icon
Because the icon visibly reveals the mystery of conception and the bearing of Christ in the womb of the Mother of God, Orthodox Christians especially pray before it for motherhood. Couples who long for children ask the Theotokos for help in conceiving a child, with humility and trust in God’s will.
Pregnant women pray before this icon for a safe pregnancy, protection from miscarriage, and the health of the child developing in the womb. The image is also connected with prayers for peaceful childbirth and for the safety of both mother and child.
Parents also pray before the Word Made Flesh icon for newborns, premature or weak infants, and for wisdom in raising children in the Christian faith. It is a fitting icon for a young mother, a family expecting a child, or a home prayer corner where parents pray for their children.
Materials and Technique
This icon is painted by hand on a seasoned linden board. The board is strengthened with oak braces. Linen cloth is applied to the front surface, then covered with layers of natural chalk gesso and polished smooth for painting and gilding.
The image is painted with mineral egg tempera. Natural pigments are ground into fine powder and mixed with an egg-based emulsion, creating deep and lasting color. The garments of the Mother of God are written in wine-red and blue tones, symbolizing the union of her human nature with heavenly purity.
The background and wide fields are gilded with 23K gold leaf (960 purity). The relief ornament is worked in the gesso before gilding, so the gold surface has depth and movement rather than appearing flat. The completed icon is protected with traditional varnish or oil finish.
