Orthodox Icon Painting Workshop in Mstyora
Mstyora, in the Vladimir region of Russia, has been known for icon painting for centuries. Our workshop continues this tradition by creating hand-painted Orthodox icons for private homes, churches, chapels, monasteries, and family gifts.
We do not treat an icon as a decorative print. A painted Orthodox icon requires a prepared wooden board, levkas/gesso, careful drawing, egg tempera, natural pigments, and often gold leaf. The result is a prayerful image made by hand, with attention to Orthodox canon and the purpose of the commission.
Customers can order icons of Jesus Christ, the Mother of God, Guardian Angels, Archangels, patron saints, feast days, wedding icons, family icons, and church compositions. If you need a finished icon, visit the catalog. If you need a special commission, we will discuss the image, size, materials, timing, and delivery before the order is confirmed.
Traditional materials for lasting Orthodox icons
Specially prepared, dried icon linden board.
Chalk primer for icon painting with the addition of linseed oil.
Tempera paints on egg yolk with natural pigments.
23-karat (960 fineness) gold leaf by Manetti (Italy) and Noris (Germany)
Several specialists may take part in one icon: board makers, levkas masters, iconographers, gilders, and finishers. This careful process helps the icon remain stable, visually clear, and suitable for prayer, display, or church use.
For international customers, we also pay attention to packing and delivery. Finished icons are photographed before shipment and packed to protect the painted surface, gilding, and wooden board during transport.
