Description

Pantocrator Orthodox Icon is a shoulder-length icon of Christ the Savior, known as Spas Oplechny. Unlike a full half-length Pantocrator with blessing hand and Gospel, this icon removes the narrative attributes and concentrates prayerful attention on the face, eyes, and silent presence of Christ.

The icon is painted in the Mstyora tradition on a linden wood board with mineral egg tempera. Its gold background is covered with genuine 960-grade gold leaf and decorated with complex hand relief chasing of plant ornament over gesso. The result is a solemn image for deep personal prayer, a home iconostasis, wedding blessing, chapel, church, or iconostasis format.

Theological Meaning of the Shoulder-Length Savior

Among the many forms of Orthodox church art, the icon of Christ the Savior holds the central place. This particular image belongs to the expressive iconographic type known as the shoulder-length Savior. Here the hands, blessing gesture, and Gospel are not shown. What remains is the most essential element: the divine face turned directly toward the person praying.

The spiritual meaning of this icon is a personal and inward encounter with God. The absence of the Gospel shifts the emphasis from Christ as preacher and teacher with the book to Christ as the eternal Lord who sees the heart of every person. It is an image of silent, all-understanding presence.

The gaze of Christ is direct, calm, and penetrating. It is strict because God is the righteous Judge, yet it is full of compassion for human weakness. Such an icon is especially suitable for quiet repentance, personal prayer, and the opening of the heart before the Lord.

Focus on the Face and Gaze

Shoulder-length images of Christ have an ancient history. Their roots go back to early Byzantine art and to monumental images where the close view of the face created strong spiritual contact with the faithful. In Russian tradition, this type became widely known in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries.

The famous Russian examples of this visual language include the Savior images associated with the Dormition Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin and the Zvenigorod Savior connected with Saint Andrei Rublev. In such images, the face itself becomes the whole field of spiritual encounter.

Color Symbolism of the Garments

Although the Savior is shown only to the shoulders, the iconographer preserves the canonical color language of Christ’s garments. The red chiton, visible at the chest and right shoulder, symbolizes the human flesh assumed by the Word of God and the blood shed on Golgotha. Its ornamental border recalls the dignity of the King of Glory.

The blue-green himation, placed over the left shoulder, symbolizes the heavenly, divine, and incomprehensible nature of Christ. Together, the garments confess that divinity and humanity are united in Christ without confusion and without separation.

The Cross Halo and the Divine Name

The head of the Savior is surrounded by a halo with a cross inside it, a feature reserved for icons of Jesus Christ. The cross recalls His saving sacrifice. In the arms of the cross are Greek letters meaning “He Who Is,” the divine name revealed to Moses. This inscription witnesses that Jesus Christ is true God, Creator of time and space.

Mstyora Materials and Technique

The value of this icon lies not only in its spiritual meaning, but also in the careful handwork of the icon painters. The icon follows Orthodox canonical tradition and is made with natural materials used in the Mstyora school.

Wood and Gesso: The Foundation

The icon is made on a carefully dried solid linden wood board. Linden is traditionally used for icon painting because it is even, workable, and low in resin. Oak splines are inserted on the reverse side to help protect the board from warping when humidity changes.

The front surface is covered with pavoloka, a linen cloth layer, and then with ten to fifteen layers of gesso made from chalk and natural glue. After drying, the gesso is polished to a smooth, almost porcelain-like surface.

Gold Leaf and Hand Relief Chasing

The visual richness of this shoulder-length Savior comes from the complex treatment of the gold background. Before gilding, the master cuts a fine plant ornament into the white gesso by hand. This pattern covers the background around the halo and the borders of the icon.

The relief is then covered with genuine 960-grade gold leaf and polished. Smooth areas of the halo shine evenly, while the chased ornament creates a play of shadow and light. The background appears almost woven from golden lace, especially in candle or lamp light.

Mineral Egg Tempera

The face of Christ is painted with natural egg tempera. Mineral pigments such as malachite, lazurite, glauconite, cinnabar, and ochres are ground finely and mixed with an egg-based emulsion. Tempera is applied in thin, transparent layers and becomes extremely durable as it bonds with the gesso.

Meaning in the Home and Choice of Size

The shoulder-length icon of Christ the Savior is an excellent choice for deep, solitary prayer. Because there are no distracting details, the icon can become a powerful central image in a home iconostasis. Before it, believers pray for protection of the family, healing, help in difficult circumstances, and peace of soul.

This icon is available in several sizes:

  • 17 x 21 cm and 20 x 24 cm: compact personal formats for a small apartment, bedroom, child’s room, or meaningful Orthodox gift.
  • 27 x 31 cm: a traditional analogion size, strong enough for detailed work on the face and the chased ornament; suitable as a main home icon or church gift.
  • 30 x 40 cm and larger: formats for large homes, private chapels, parish spaces, and individual iconostasis measurements.

Care for the Chased Gold Background

The chased gold background requires very delicate care. Because the ornament is raised and detailed, dust should be removed only with a dry, very soft brush or a special soft cloth. Water, wet wipes, sprays, alcohol, and household chemicals must not be used.

A wooden kiot with glass is strongly recommended. It protects the natural wood board from humidity changes and drafts, and it protects the gold leaf and chasing from scratches, dust, and candle soot.

Ordering, Shipping, and Payment
