Description

Orthodox Icon of Pantocrator is a hand-painted Orthodox icon of the Lord Almighty, or Christ Pantocrator, created in the academic Mstyora icon-painting tradition. This icon is a deeply venerated image of the Savior with a 23K gold leaf (960 purity) background and fine hand relief chasing over gesso.

Christ is shown as the God-man, Heavenly King, and righteous Judge, yet also as the merciful Savior whose gaze is filled with love for the person who prays. This icon is suitable for a home iconostasis, daily prayer, a wedding blessing pair, Orthodox gifts, chapels, churches, and iconostasis formats.

Theological Meaning of the Pantocrator

In Orthodox tradition, there is no image more fundamental and all-embracing than the icon of the Lord Almighty, or Pantocrator. It visually proclaims the Christian teaching about Christ as true God and true Man, heavenly King, and righteous Judge.

This hand-painted icon is written in an academic, pictorial style. Unlike the stricter Byzantine manner with flatter color fields and reverse perspective, academic painting uses realistic modeling of the face, soft light and shadow, and psychological depth. The gaze of the Savior is strict, yet filled with mercy and love.

Color Symbolism: Divine and Human Natures

The red chiton, or lower garment, symbolizes the human nature of Christ, His blood shed on the Cross for the sins of the world, and His royal dignity. The gold clav on the right shoulder is a traditional sign of high authority and noble origin.

The blue himation, or outer mantle, symbolizes the heavenly, eternal, and incomprehensible divine nature of Christ. The blue garment placed over the red expresses that divinity clothed itself in human flesh for the salvation of humanity.

The Word and the Blessing

In His left hand, the Savior holds the open Gospel, the sign of divine teaching brought into the world. On the pages are the words: “Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” This is a consolation for every heart seeking true peace in God.

The right hand of Christ is folded in blessing. The fingers form the monogram of the name Jesus Christ, IC XC. With this gesture the Lord blesses the person praying before Him and the whole world He created.

The Halo and Divine Name

The head of the Savior is surrounded by a cross-shaped halo, a sign reserved in iconography for Jesus Christ. The cross in the halo recalls His sacrifice on Golgotha. The Greek letters in the halo mean “He Who Is,” the divine name revealed to Moses, and confess Christ as the eternal Word of God.

Mstyora Technique: How the Icon Is Created

Creating a hand-painted Pantocrator icon in the Mstyora tradition is a complex and prayerful process. It requires careful craft, natural materials, and many stages of patient work.

Board Preparation and Gesso

The icon begins with a dried linden wood board. Linden is soft, even in structure, and well suited for icon painting. Oak splines are inserted on the reverse side to help prevent the board from warping due to changes in temperature and humidity.

A linen cloth layer, called pavoloka, is glued to the front. Over it, the master applies many layers of natural gesso made from chalk and glue. The polished gesso becomes the bright, durable ground on which the painting can live for generations.

Mineral Tempera Painting

The face, hands, and garments are painted with natural mineral tempera. Pigments from minerals such as lazurite, malachite, glauconite, cinnabar, hematite, and ochre are ground finely and mixed with egg emulsion. Mineral tempera penetrates the gesso, hardens over time, and keeps its brightness for many years.

23K Gold Leaf (960 Purity) and Hand Relief Chasing

The main decorative feature of this icon is the gold background, symbolizing divine, uncreated light. Before the gold is applied, the master cuts a complex plant ornament into the white gesso by hand with fine tools.

Then the relief is gilded with genuine 23K gold leaf (960 purity) and polished. The chased ornament gives the gold field volume, movement, and a living play of light, especially in candle or lamp light. This makes the icon solemn, radiant, and royal without turning it into mere decoration.

The Icon of Pantocrator in the Home

The Pantocrator icon is the center of the Orthodox home prayer corner. Believers turn to Christ in every circumstance, because He is the source of every good gift.

  • In joy and sorrow: with gratitude for help and with prayer for consolation in difficult times.
  • For forgiveness of sins: with repentance, asking for cleansing of the soul and strength for correction.
  • For family protection: for peace, love, and understanding between spouses, children, and relatives.
  • Before important work: for blessing before honest labor, healing, travel, study, or serious decisions.

The icon of the Lord Almighty also belongs to the Orthodox wedding blessing pair. It blesses the groom during the sacrament of marriage and becomes one of the principal holy images of the new family.

Care, Protection, and Placement

Care for an icon with relief chasing and gold leaf should be minimal and very gentle. Dust should be removed only with a dry soft brush or velvet cloth. Wet cloths, sponges, sprays, alcohol, and cleaning products must not be used.

A wooden kiot with glass is recommended, especially for an icon with gold leaf and relief ornament. It helps protect the board from humidity changes and the delicate gold surface from dust, scratches, and candle soot.

Questions and Answers

What is a kovcheg on an icon board?

A kovcheg is a recessed field on the front of an icon board. For this icon, board construction can be discussed individually.

Is the 20 x 24 cm size suitable for a wedding blessing icon?

Yes, especially for a compact home setting, though 27 x 31 cm is the more traditional and proportionate wedding size.

How is real gold leaf different from imitation gold?

Genuine 23K gold leaf (960 purity) does not oxidize, darken, or turn green like imitation metal leaf, and keeps its radiance for a very long time.

How should an icon with relief chasing be cared for?

Dust it only with a dry soft brush or velvet cloth. Wet cloths, sponges, and cleaning products must not be used.

Should the icon be blessed after receiving it?

Many Orthodox believers bring a new icon to their parish church for blessing before placing it in the home icon corner.

Can the Gospel text be changed?

Yes. The usual text is Come unto Me, all ye that labor, but another canonical Gospel text can be discussed individually.

How long does a hand-painted icon like this take to make?

An icon with hand painting, gold leaf, and relief chasing usually requires several weeks because each layer must dry properly.

Is a wooden kiot required?

A kiot is not strictly required, but it is recommended to protect the icon, gold leaf, and painted surface from dust, soot, and humidity changes.

Can this icon be made for a church iconostasis?
