The icon of the Ascension of the Lord is a monumental and profound image created by the masters of Mstyora using the canonical technique of academic Orthodox iconography. This image, which captures the triumphant conclusion of the Savior’s earthly ministry, will become a majestic shrine in your home or parish. It is available to order in various sizes, including custom dimensions for church iconostases.
The event depicted on this icon is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the Orthodox calendar. The Ascension icon is a visual testament to the fulfillment of Christ’s promise regarding the salvation of humanity and His return in glory to God the Father. In the “Mstyora Icons” workshop, we approach the creation of this image with special reverence, understanding that the multi-figured composition of the Ascension requires not only high artistic mastery but also deep prayerful concentration from the iconographer.
The presented work is executed in the famous Mstyora academic style. This painting technique is distinguished by its special softness, depth of space, and the profound spirituality of the faces. Unlike strict graphic canons, the academic style allows the artist to convey the living feeling of joy and awe of the apostles contemplating the ascent of their Teacher. The radiance of pure gold leaf in the background creates the effect of endless Divine light in which the Savior dwells.
Theological Significance of the Ascension Image
The Ascension of the Lord took place on the fortieth day after His glorious Resurrection. Having gathered His disciples on the Mount of Olives, Jesus Christ blessed them and began to distance Himself, rising into the sky until a cloud hid Him from their sight. This event marks the deification of human nature: Christ ascended to heaven not only in His Divinity but also in the human nature He assumed, opening the path to the Kingdom of Heaven for every believer.
The Ascension icon traditionally depicts two spheres: the heavenly one, where the Lord dwells, and the earthly one, where His disciples and the Mother of God remain. This is a symbol of the unbreakable bond between the Heavenly Church and the Earthly Church. Christ departs, but leaves a promise: “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Iconographic Analysis: Details of the Mstyora Painting
The iconography of the Ascension is one of the most complex and intense in the Orthodox tradition. In our work, we meticulously paint every element of the composition:
- The Image of the Savior in Glory: In the upper part of the icon, Christ is depicted seated on a cloud within a shining mandorla (aureole of light). His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. The Savior’s figure is draped in the finest gold hatching (assist), emphasizing His Divine nature.
- The Most Holy Theotokos (Mother of God): She stands in the center of the lower group, directly beneath her ascending Son. Her figure is a bastion of silence and prayerful standing. In the Mstyora tradition, the face of the Mother of God is painted with special tenderness, conveying maternal love and faith in a swift reunion.
- Apostles and Angels: To the sides of the Mother of God are two groups of apostles. Their gestures are full of dynamic emotion: some look at the sky with hope, while others spread their hands in bewilderment. Between the apostles stand two angels in white garments, pointing toward the ascending Lord.
- The Landscape (Mount of Olives): The use of the academic style allows the master to create picturesque “gorki” (rocks/mountains) with soft shadows. Delicate trees and the detailed rendering of the soil give the icon a sense of the reality of earthly space over which the heavenly miracle occurs.
- Smooth Gold Background: The use of 23-karat (960 standard) gold leaf without additional chasing (embossing) is a deliberate choice. It creates the effect of a pure, unearthly radiance that does not compete with the multi-figured painting but beautifully frames it.
Technology and Longevity: Creating a Family Heirloom
Working on an icon as complex as the “Ascension of the Lord” takes considerable time. This is due to the strict adherence to technologies that allow the icon to be preserved for centuries. We create not just an image, but a holy artifact that will become the primary treasure of your home and will be passed down through generations.
Everything starts with the selection of the board. We use only linden wood that has undergone years of natural drying. To prevent the wood from warping due to humidity changes, the master manually cuts and inserts counter-facing oak splines into the back. Linen pavoloka is glued to the front, followed by the application of levkas—a primer made from natural chalk and fish glue. Each layer of levkas is meticulously sanded.
The painting is done with natural mineral pigments. We hand-grind the stones (lapis lazuli, cinnabar, ochre) ourselves, mixing them with an egg yolk emulsion. This paint chemically bonds with the primer, becoming one with the board. Finally, a protective coating is applied to protect the gold and colors from dust and fading.
Individual Cost Calculation and Timeframes
Please note that the “Ascension of the Lord” icon is one of the most labor-intensive to execute. Because of the large number of faces (12 apostles, the Theotokos, two angels, and the Savior)—each requiring filigree academic detailing—the price for this work is negotiable and quoted upon request.
The final cost depends on several factors:
- The selected size of the board (from a personal cabinet icon to a monumental church image);
- The complexity of the detailing in the landscape and garments;
- The current workload of the leading masters at the “Mstyora Icons” workshop.
We provide an individual calculation for each client. Production times are also discussed personally—usually ranging from 4 to 8 weeks, as rushing the process of icon painting is strictly impermissible.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Why is the price for the Ascension of the Lord icon negotiable?
This is due to the high complexity of the multi-figured composition. The icon depicts 16 faces, each requiring individual detailing in the academic style. The price is calculated individually based on the requested size, level of detail, and the workload of our iconographers.
2. Can I order this icon in an iconostasis size?
Yes, the workshop produces monumental custom-sized images for churches and private iconostases.
3. Is real gold used on the background of the icon?
Yes, we use only genuine 23-karat (960 standard) gold leaf, which preserves its brilliant luster for centuries without tarnishing.
4. What is the feature of the academic style in this icon?
The academic style is distinguished by its picturesque quality, soft tonal transitions, and realistic rendering of the figures and landscape, conveying volume and emotion beautifully.
5. Why is the Ascension icon often gifted to churches?
It is a mandatory icon in the festive tier (Festive Row) of an iconostasis, symbolizing the triumph of faith and the ultimate salvation of humanity.
6. How long does it take to paint such a complex icon?
The painting process takes between 4 to 8 weeks due to the complexity of the work and the necessary technological drying cycles for the natural materials.
7. How should I properly care for an icon with a smooth gold background?
We highly recommend keeping the icon in a protective kiot (icon case). The surface must only be dry-dusted with a very soft squirrel-hair brush; moisture and cleaning chemicals are strictly prohibited.
8. What is the significance of the Theotokos (Mother of God) being present on the Ascension icon?
Although the Gospels do not explicitly mention Mary’s presence on the Mount of Olives, Church Tradition and iconographic canons place Her in the center to symbolize the Earthly Church awaiting the Second Coming of Christ.
9. Can modifications be made to the iconography?
Yes, for custom orders, we can supplement the icon by painting the images of your family’s patron saints on the margins, making it a truly unique family shrine.
10. Will the icon be blessed before it is shipped?
Upon your request, we can arrange for the icon to be fully blessed and consecrated in an Orthodox church in Mstyora before dispatch, or you may choose to have it blessed at your own parish.
