This hand-painted icon of Saint Helena, Equal-to-the-Apostles, also known as Flavia Julia Helena Augusta, presents one of the most important women in Christian history. She was the mother of Saint Constantine the Great, the first Christian Roman emperor, and she played a major role in the new freedom granted to the Church after the age of persecution. In Orthodox tradition, she is especially honored for her pilgrimage to Jerusalem and for the finding of the Life-Giving Cross of the Lord.
This full-length icon is painted in the tradition of Old Russian Mstyora iconography. The careful treatment of the imperial garments, the depth of mineral colors, and the radiance of real gold leaf make the image both a strong home shrine and a refined work of sacred art.
Iconography and Theological Meaning
In this icon, Saint Helena appears as a majestic Byzantine empress. Her face is strict, dignified, and spiritual; the gaze conveys wisdom, calm, and firmness of faith formed through a long and difficult life.
The clothing of the empress is rich in symbolism and historical meaning. Her head is covered with a white cloth, a sign of widowhood, modesty, and deep piety. Over it rises a golden jeweled crown, the clear attribute of imperial authority.
The lower robe is a deep blue, or lapis-like, color. In iconographic language, blue may point to heavenly purity and the soul’s turning toward God. A vertical gold band ornamented with pearls runs down the garment, recalling the loros or clavus of Byzantine aristocratic dress.
The dark cherry-purple imperial mantle points to her status as Augusta. Red and purple tones in sacred art are connected with royalty, dignity, life, and the mystery of Christ’s saving Passion. The icon therefore shows Helena’s earthly rank, but places it in service to her Christian witness.
Saint Helena holds her main attributes. In her left hand is a rolled white scroll, which may symbolize the Gospel teaching she helped make visible in the empire, as well as the imperial decrees that protected Christians. In her right hand she reverently holds a red eight-pointed cross against her breast, a visible reminder of her great work in Jerusalem and the finding of the Cross on which the Savior was crucified.
The background is covered with real gold leaf. This is not simply decoration. In Orthodox iconography, gold points to divine, uncreated light and to the spiritual triumph of the saint. In this icon it gives the image a warm, royal, and prayerful glow.
Who This Saint Helena Icon Is Suitable For
An icon of Saint Helena is a meaningful named icon for girls and women baptized with the name Helen, Helena, Elena, or related forms of the name. As a baptismal gift, name day gift, birthday gift, or anniversary gift, it offers a strong heavenly patroness whose life combines humility, courage, wisdom, and mature faith.
Because Saint Helena was honored with imperial authority and acted with remarkable energy and discernment, her icon is also appropriate for women in leadership, business, public service, or positions of responsibility. Orthodox Christians may ask her prayers for wisdom, justice, calm judgment, and the ability to use authority for good.
The icon may also be meaningful for mothers and older people. Saint Helena embraced Christianity in mature years and undertook her great pilgrimage to the Holy Land when she was already elderly. Her life reminds the faithful that spiritual courage, repentance, service, and meaningful work are not limited by age.
Prayer Before Saint Helena Equal-to-the-Apostles
The Church calls Saint Helena Equal-to-the-Apostles because her work helped strengthen and spread the Christian faith. Before her icon, Orthodox Christians pray for faith, spiritual clarity, wisdom, family protection, and strength in difficult circumstances.
People may ask Saint Helena’s prayers for the finding of faith and spiritual sight, especially when a person is searching for a path toward God. Mothers may pray for children who have become distant from the Church, asking for patience, humility, and wise love.
Because Helena is traditionally connected with the finding of the Cross, Christians may also ask her prayers in difficult searches: when looking for a lost thing, seeking clarity in a tangled situation, trying to find the right decision, or praying for someone who is missing. Such prayer should be understood as a request for God’s help through the saint’s intercession, not as a mechanical guarantee.
Saint Helena is also remembered by people with public responsibility, including those in government, service, administration, and large projects. Her example points to authority used in the service of faith, justice, and the protection of the Church.
Families may pray before her icon for stability, wisdom in raising children, support in material difficulties, and peace in the home. Older and infirm people may find in her life a source of encouragement, since her greatest visible work was accomplished in old age.
Brief Life and the Finding of the Cross
Flavia Julia Helena was born in the middle of the third century and, according to tradition, came from a humble family. Her beauty, intelligence, and strength of character attracted the Roman military leader Constantius Chlorus, with whom she had a son, the future Emperor Constantine the Great. Later, for political reasons, Constantius separated from Helena. She endured this trial with humility and devoted herself to her son.
When Constantine became sole ruler of the Roman Empire, he granted freedom to Christians through the Edict of Milan in 313 and honored his mother with the title Augusta. Helena received baptism in later life and became a zealous Christian.
The main work associated with her life was her pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 326. She was nearly eighty years old. She went to the Holy Land to search for the Cross on which Christ had been crucified and to cleanse the holy places from pagan structures. After careful inquiry, the place of the Holy Sepulchre was identified, and during excavations three crosses, nails, and the inscription connected with the Crucifixion were found.
According to Church tradition, the true Cross was revealed through a miracle of healing. Patriarch Macarius of Jerusalem had the crosses brought to a gravely ill woman, and the touch of the true Life-Giving Cross brought healing. In joy, the patriarch and the empress lifted up, or exalted, the Cross so that the people could see it. This event is remembered in the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross.
Saint Helena founded and supported many churches in the Holy Land, including sites associated with Bethlehem, the Mount of Olives, and Gethsemane. She reposed peacefully in 330. The memory of Saints Constantine and Helena is celebrated on May 21 / June 3, and the finding of the Cross and nails by Saint Helena is commemorated on March 6 / 19.
Materials and Mstyora Painting Technique
This icon is the result of careful handwork by painters preserving the tradition of the Mstyora school. The base is a dry solid linden wood panel. A recessed center, or kovcheg, may be prepared on the front, and oak support battens are inserted on the back to help keep the wood stable.
The surface is covered with linen cloth and layers of chalk gesso, creating a smooth white ground for painting. The image is painted in natural egg tempera. Mineral pigments such as lapis tones, cinnabar, ochres, and other earth colors give depth and purity to the color.
The full background is gilded with 23K gold leaf (960 purity). Thin gold sheets are applied by hand over the prepared surface. This ancient technique follows the logic of Byzantine and Russian icon painting, where gold is used to suggest divine light rather than ordinary material luxury.
The finished icon receives a protective finish. With proper care, egg tempera and mineral pigments can retain their depth and beauty for a very long time.
Sizes and Iconostasis Formats
The icon is available in several vertical sizes: 13×25 cm (5.1×9.8 in), 18×31 cm (7.1×12.2 in), 30×50 cm (11.8×19.7 in). The 13×25 cm (5.1×9.8 in) size is an elegant elongated format suitable for a named gift or a small home icon corner. The 18×31 cm (7.1×12.2 in) size gives more space for the imperial garments, pearl ornament, crown, and expression of the face.
The 30×50 cm (11.8×19.7 in) size is a large and monumental format that can become a central family shrine. It allows the full-length figure, red cross, scroll, gold background, and details of the Byzantine clothing to be seen with greater clarity.
For churches, chapels, or a large-scale gift, the icon of Saint Helena may also be painted in individual iconostasis sizes. Decorative options such as relief work in the gesso, added ornament, or selected embellishment can be discussed before the icon is made, as long as they remain appropriate to the sacred image.
Blessing and Care
The icon may be blessed in an Orthodox church before shipping if this is requested when the order is arranged. A blessed icon is intended for prayer, thanksgiving to God, and turning to Saint Helena as a heavenly intercessor.
A hand-painted icon should be protected from sudden changes of temperature and humidity. It should not be placed above radiators, near strong heat, or in direct sunlight. The surface should not be wiped with wet cloths, alcohol, household cleaners, or rough fabric.
Dust should be removed only with a dry, very soft brush, without pressure. For long-term preservation, especially for an icon with a full gold background, a wooden glazed icon case is recommended. It protects the painting and gilding from dust, touch, soot, moisture, and accidental damage.
