St. Boniface Orthodox Icon
St. Boniface of Rome, also known as St. Boniface, was one of the most prominent Christian missionaries and martyrs of the early period of Christianity. He lived in the 3rd century and is considered one of the Apostles of Germany, as he carried out an active preaching ministry among the pagans in Germany and other European lands.
On the icon of St. Boniface, he is usually depicted in priestly vestments with a bishop’s mitre on his head, holding a book and a martyr’s weapon in his hands. His characteristic attribute may be his axe, which is a symbol of his death – he was killed by pagans during his missionary work.
