Virgin Mary Seven Arrows Icon is a hand-painted Orthodox icon of the Mother of God known in Russian tradition as the Seven Arrows. It is one of the most emotionally powerful icons of the Theotokos, showing her alone, without the Christ Child, pierced by seven swords that symbolize the fullness of her sorrow.
This image is especially loved for prayer in family conflicts, hostility, resentment, envy, slander, court disputes, and situations where angry hearts need to be softened. It is also placed in homes as a prayerful protection from people with harmful intentions.
The listed size is 27×31 cm (10.6×12.2 in). This version is painted in an academic style, with a soft realistic face, 960 gold leaf background and margins, and fine hand chasing over the gilded surface.
The Meaning of the Seven Arrows Icon
Among icons of the Mother of God, the Seven Arrows icon stands out for its direct emotional force. The Theotokos is not shown holding Christ, nor surrounded by narrative details. The whole composition is concentrated on her sorrow.
The seven swords or arrows pierce her heart and reveal the immeasurable pain she endured as the Mother of Christ, especially at the Cross.
At the same time, the icon speaks not only about the past suffering of the Theotokos. It also shows how human sin, anger, cruelty, envy, and hatred continue to wound the loving heart of the Mother of God.
Simeon’s Prophecy
The theological foundation of the icon is the Gospel account of the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple. When the Virgin Mary and righteous Joseph brought the Child Jesus to the Jerusalem Temple, they were met by the elder Simeon.
Simeon blessed them and spoke prophetic words to the Mother of God: that her Son would be a sign spoken against, and that a sword would pierce her own soul also.
This prophecy is shown visibly in the Seven Arrows icon. The swords are not physical weapons against the body. They are signs of the spiritual and maternal suffering that passed through the soul of the Theotokos.
In biblical symbolism, the number seven often means fullness and completion. Here it points to the fullness of her grief, and also to the many sins and passions that pierce the human heart.
The History of the Wonderworking Icon
The history of the original Seven Arrows icon is striking and humbling. For a long time, the holy image was unknown and neglected in the bell tower of the church of Saint John the Theologian near the Toshnya River, not far from Vologda.
The icon had been turned face down and used like an ordinary board walked upon by bell ringers, who did not know that they were stepping over a sacred image.
The icon was revealed through a peasant from the Kadnikov district who had suffered for many years from severe lameness and weakness. Doctors could not help him.
In a dream he heard a voice commanding him to find an icon of the Mother of God in the bell tower and pray before it. The church servants did not immediately believe him, but after he was finally allowed to search, the icon was found, cleaned, and a moleben was served before it.
The sick man was healed. Later, in 1830, during a cholera epidemic in Vologda, a procession with the Seven Arrows icon was followed by the retreat of the deadly disease from the city.
Seven Arrows and Softener of Evil Hearts
The Seven Arrows icon is often popularly associated with the icon called Softener of Evil Hearts. Their prayerful meaning is very close: both are approached for reconciliation, peace, and deliverance from anger.
The main difference is the arrangement of the swords. In the Seven Arrows icon, they are placed asymmetrically: four on one side and three on the other.
In the Softener of Evil Hearts icon, also called Simeon’s Prophecy, the swords are usually arranged more symmetrically: three on one side, three on the other, and one from below.
This version follows the Seven Arrows arrangement.
Prayer for Reconciliation
People pray before the Seven Arrows icon when conflict has become sharp and painful: between spouses, parents and children, relatives, neighbors, coworkers, or former friends.
The Mother of God is asked to soften hardened hearts, help people forgive, stop cycles of accusation, and bring love back into the home.
Prayer before this icon also teaches the person praying to look inward. It is not only the hearts of others that need softening; one’s own anger, resentment, envy, and impatience also need healing.
Protection From Ill Will
The Seven Arrows icon is often approached in prayer for protection from slander, envy, unfair authority, secret enemies, and people who come with harmful intentions.
There is a pious custom of placing the icon near the entrance or opposite the door, so that the gaze of the Mother of God meets those who enter.
This does not turn the icon into a talisman. It is a prayerful reminder that the home should be guarded from evil thoughts and that every person entering should be met by the call to peace.
Academic Painting and the Face of the Theotokos
This version is painted in an academic, realistic manner. The face of the Mother of God is modeled with soft transitions, living depth, and a compassionate gaze.
Academic icon painting, especially in the Russian tradition from the eighteenth century onward, uses light and shadow, natural proportions, and a more human emotional expression.
For the Seven Arrows icon, this style helps reveal the tenderness and sorrow of the Mother of God without weakening the spiritual seriousness of the image.
Gold Background and Hand Chasing
The background and margins are covered with true 960 gold leaf. Over the gilded surface, the master creates a hand-tooled relief ornament.
This technique is often called chasing or tooling over gold. The relief is made in the prepared gesso under the gold and appears as a rich, textile-like or metalwork pattern.
The ornament catches the light in many small reflections, giving the icon the effect of a precious chased cover while preserving the hand-painted figure of the Mother of God.
Materials and Craftsmanship
The icon is painted on a solid linden board. Oak splines are inserted into the back to help protect the board from bending over time.
The front is covered with linen and layers of chalk gesso, creating a smooth foundation for painting, gilding, and relief ornament.
The figure is painted with high-quality layered painting, while the gilded background and margins receive the detailed hand-chased ornament. A protective finish helps preserve the painted and gilded surfaces.
Gift Meaning
The Seven Arrows icon is a meaningful gift for a new home, for a family seeking peace, or for someone who carries responsibility and often faces tension, criticism, or conflict.
It may also be given for a wedding anniversary as a prayer that spouses may live in mutual understanding, forgiveness, and peace.
Its beauty and spiritual meaning make it both a protective home icon and a serious family shrine.

Care and Preservation
An icon with gold leaf and relief chasing should be handled carefully. Do not wash it with water, wipe it with damp cloths, use chemical cleaners, or polish the gold.
Dust may be removed only with a very soft dry brush. Because dust and candle soot can settle into the relief, a glazed wooden kiot is recommended for long-term protection.
