Armenian Orthodox Icon of Virgin Mary
An extraordinary story happened to an ancient icon of the Mother of God. In ancient times, dating back to the early Middle Ages, Ukrainian, Armenian and Polish communities coexisted peacefully in the city of Kamyanets-Podolsk. And there was the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, which was famous for the icon of the Armenian Mother of God. All Christians, regardless of nationality, worshiped the Holy Face, which had miraculous powers.
It is said that the icon was brought to the Crimean peninsula from Ani, a city located in the kingdom of Bagratids (an Armenian princely family known in Transcaucasia). It was in the X century. In about 1380 the image of the Virgin was acquired by settlers from Armenia and delivered first to Chersonesos (now Sevastopol), and from there to Kamenets-Podolsky. Until 1672 it was located in this city.
There is a legend based on historical events. According to it, in 1672 the Turks captured the city, and the Holy Image was taken to Macedonia, and the temple was converted into a mosque. The Turkish family used the icon for household needs, rolling out dough on it.
One day Armenian merchants came to Macedonia, the missing relic caught their eyes, they bought the icon and returned it to the Kamenetz-Podolsk temple. Armenians were allowed to hold services there, but constant oppression by the Turks forced the Christians to leave the city. In 1673 the nuns together with the rest of the laity went on a long journey, taking the icon with them.
On three ships 600 Armenians set out on a long journey across the Black Sea to Macedonia. During the voyage they were caught in a storm and only two ships reached their destination, one of which carried an image of the Mother of God, which strengthened the faith and spirit of the travelers. Two years later the Armenians set out again and settled in the city of Lvov, and they brought the icon with them and placed it in the Armenian Cathedral.
After the revolution the church was looted and the icon was lost. But a miracle happened, and after 80 years the image of the Mother of God returned to the Church of St. Nicholas. She protects all believers who turn to her for help, helps in difficult life situations, heals the soul and body.
