Description

Hand-painted Authentic Peter and Fevronia Icon is a solemn Orthodox image of the holy faithful Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia of Murom. In this version, the saints are shown full-length in rich princely garments, with scrolls in their hands, against a luminous gold background and a detailed Murom landscape. The icon unites Mstyora icon painting, 23K gold leaf (960 purity), tooled gold relief ornament, and a border painted in a cold-enamel style.

This is a family icon with a clear spiritual meaning. Peter and Fevronia are honored as patrons of Christian marriage, faithfulness, patient love, and peace in the home. The scrolls in their hands make this image especially connected with wisdom: the wisdom to forgive, to remain faithful, to build the family on faith, and to preserve love through trials.

Iconography: Scrolls and the Murom Landscape

The composition follows the classic form of a full-length paired standing image. Peter and Fevronia stand together, turned toward one another in a silent spiritual dialogue. Their faces are painted in a soft academic manner, with attention to inner light, meekness, and wisdom rather than external drama.

The central feature of this version is the scrolls in the hands of the holy spouses. Prince Peter holds an open scroll with writing, while Princess Fevronia holds a closed scroll. In Orthodox iconography, a scroll can signify divine wisdom, teaching, prophetic insight, and spiritual knowledge. In the hands of Peter and Fevronia, the scrolls point to the commandments of faithfulness, patience, love, and humility that their life offers to Christian families.

The clothing emphasizes their princely dignity. Peter wears a deep blue garment and a red mantle with gold ornament. Fevronia is dressed in an emerald-green gown and a red mantle. The hems and collars of their garments are decorated with painted jewel-like details, imitating precious stones and pearls through mineral pigments.

Above the saints, Christ the Savior blesses their union from a heavenly cloud. Behind them is a detailed Murom landscape: the blue waters of the Oka River, green hills, and a white-stone monastery with many domes, recalling the Holy Trinity Monastery in Murom, where the relics of Saints Peter and Fevronia are venerated.

Tooled Gold and Painted Enamel-Style Ornament

The decorative value of this icon is especially rich. The sky behind the figures and the halos are covered with 23K gold leaf (960 purity). Before the gold is applied, the craftsman creates a fine raised plant ornament on the prepared gesso. When gold leaf lies over this relief, the surface catches the light from different angles and gives the background a bright, living effect.

The wide blue borders are also carefully decorated by hand. A continuous gold plant ornament is painted with a fine brush, and red, green, and gold roundels are placed inside the pattern. This technique imitates the solemn appearance of old cloisonne enamel or a basma-style church ornament, while remaining part of the painted icon surface.

The result is a festive and dignified image. The gold background, ornamented borders, princely garments, scrolls, and landscape all work together to present Peter and Fevronia not simply as a married couple, but as holy spouses whose family life became a witness of Christian wisdom.

When This Icon Is Given

Saints Peter and Fevronia are among the most beloved Orthodox patrons of marriage and family life. It can be given to parents, spouses, godchildren, or close friends as a sign of respect for a marriage that has endured years of shared life. For a family in a difficult period, the image can become a prayerful reminder that reconciliation and wisdom are possible with God’s help.

Prayer to the Wonderworkers of Murom

Orthodox Christians pray before Saints Peter and Fevronia for the preservation of love and faithfulness, peace between spouses, wisdom during family conflict, patience, forgiveness, the blessing of children, healing in illness, and protection of the family from division and envy.

Their life was not free from suffering, but they remained united through illness, social pressure, exile, and misunderstanding. For this reason, their icon is especially close to families that know married life requires spiritual work. Prayer before the icon is not a mechanical guarantee of an outcome; it is a humble request to God through the intercession of His saints.

The Life of Peter and Fevronia

According to tradition, Prince Peter of Murom suffered from an illness that no one could heal. It was revealed that he would be healed by Fevronia, a wise maiden from the Ryazan region. She was not only skilled in healing, but also known for deep spiritual wisdom. She healed the prince and asked him to marry her. When Peter first failed to keep his promise, the illness returned. After repentance, he was healed again and married Fevronia.

When Peter became ruler of Murom, the proud boyars refused to accept Fevronia because of her humble origin. They demanded that Peter either abandon his wife or leave the throne. Peter chose love and God’s law concerning the faithfulness of marriage, leaving the city together with Fevronia. In exile, she comforted him with wisdom and patience.

After their departure, disorder began in Murom, and the boyars asked the spouses to return. Peter and Fevronia forgave them and ruled with justice. In old age, the couple received monastic tonsure and prayed to depart this life on the same day and hour. According to tradition, they reposed on July 8, 1228, and even when people tried to separate their bodies, the saints were found together again. Their unity became a sign of faithful love that endures beyond death.

Mstyora Technique and Materials

This icon is made by hand according to the traditional methods of the Mstyora school. The base is a solid linden board strengthened with oak splines. Linen cloth and chalk gesso prepare the front surface for painting and gilding. The raised ornament is formed before the gold is applied, so the gilded surface becomes richly textured rather than flat.

The painting is done in mineral egg tempera. Natural pigments are ground and mixed with egg emulsion, allowing the colors to remain clear and durable when the icon is properly cared for. The faces, garments, landscape, inscriptions, borders, and ornamental details are painted by hand. The finished icon is protected with a natural oil varnish.

Size, Blessing, and Use

Available size: 27×31 cm (10.6×12.2 in). This is a classic family icon size, large enough to show the scrolls, faces, gold relief ornament, monastery landscape, and decorated blue borders clearly. Larger or iconostasis formats can be discussed individually before painting.
