Eugene Botkin Orthodox Icon is a hand-painted Orthodox icon of Saint Eugene Sergeyevich Botkin, the righteous passion-bearer and physician who remained faithful to the Russian Royal Family until death. The icon presents him not simply as a historical doctor, but as a saint whose medical calling became a path of Christian mercy, loyalty, and sacrificial love.
Saint Eugene Botkin (1865-1918) was an outstanding Russian physician and the son of the famous professor of medicine Sergey Botkin. In 1908 he was appointed physician to the family of Emperor Nicholas II. His life motto, “By faith, loyalty, and labor,” became the measure of his final witness. After the revolution, when the Royal Family was arrested and sent into exile, Doctor Botkin could have remained free and continued his career. Instead, he chose to share their captivity so that his patients would not be left without medical care and human support. On July 17, 1918, he was killed in the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg together with the Royal Family.
Eugene Botkin Orthodox Icon – Meaning and Iconography
The icon is striking because it unites the memory of a modern saint with the language of traditional Orthodox icon painting. Saint Eugene is shown in iconographic garments rather than in a secular suit or military uniform. This emphasizes that his holiness is not bound to one historical moment and visually places him close to the ancient holy physicians and unmercenary healers.
The saint holds the signs of his medical vocation. In his right hand is a fine medical instrument, recalling the tools held by holy healers in Orthodox icons. In his left hand he carries an open wooden case with three small vessels of healing remedies. These details directly point to his lifelong service through medicine and to the Christian compassion with which he served the sick.
His garments also carry meaning. The light white-blue tunic suggests purity of soul and quietly recalls the physician’s white coat. A richly ornamented golden shoulder piece rests above the tunic, while a vivid cinnabar-red mantle falls over the left shoulder. In Orthodox iconography, red often points to martyrdom, suffering for Christ, and blood shed in faithful witness.
The face of Saint Eugene is written with recognizable portrait features: a grey wedge-shaped beard, moustache, open forehead, and a calm, attentive gaze. The expression is not one of earthly exhaustion, but of a righteous man already illumined by peace. Around his head is a large gold halo, bordered with white enamel drops that imitate a precious pearl edging.
Gold, Relief Ornament, and Materials
This icon is made as a richly adorned devotional work. The wide fields and background are covered with 23K gold leaf (960 purity). Before gilding, the master forms a deep hand-tooled floral relief in the gesso, creating a basma-style ornament that catches the light like a precious frame. A fine red outer line marks the edge of the sacred image and separates the earthly surface from the heavenly space of the icon.
The icon is painted on a solid linden board with inset oak splines to help protect the wood from warping. A linen cloth is applied to the board, followed by many layers of natural chalk gesso, polished to a smooth surface. The saint’s face, garments, medical case, and details are painted in mineral egg tempera. The finished painted surface is protected with natural oil and varnish, while the gold fields retain their full brilliance.
Available sizes: 17×21 cm (6.7×8.3 in), 20×24 cm (7.9×9.4 in), 27×31 cm (10.6×12.2 in), 30×40 cm (11.8×15.7 in). Larger church and iconostasis sizes can be made by individual commission.

Questions and Answers
Why is Saint Eugene shown in traditional icon garments if he lived in the twentieth century?
Orthodox iconography often clothes modern saints in timeless liturgical or ancient-style garments rather than ordinary historical dress. In this icon, the light tunic and mantle place Saint Eugene Botkin among the holy physician saints and point to holiness that is not limited by earthly time.
What does Saint Eugene hold in his right hand?
He holds a fine medical instrument, similar to the attribute often seen in icons of holy healers. It refers to his calling as a physician and to his faithful service to the sick.
What is shown in the open case in his left hand?
The open wooden case contains three small vessels for healing remedies. This detail identifies the saint as a doctor and recalls the mercy and readiness to help that marked his life.
What does the red mantle signify?
The bright red mantle points to martyrdom and sacrificial witness. Saint Eugene remained with the Royal Family in captivity and accepted death with them in Yekaterinburg in 1918.
When was Eugene Botkin glorified as a saint?
He was venerated by the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia together with the Royal Martyrs in 1981, and he was glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church in 2016 as a righteous passion-bearer.
What is the hand-tooled gold ornament on the fields?
The wide gold fields are decorated with a relief floral ornament made by hand before gilding. This basma-style tooling gives the icon a rich, jewel-like appearance while remaining part of the painted icon rather than a separate metal cover.
What do the white dots around the halo represent?
The white enamel drops imitate a pearl border around the halo. This recalls the old Russian tradition of adorning sacred images with pearls and precious ornament.
What inscriptions are placed beside the saint?
The inscriptions identify him in Church Slavonic style as the holy passion-bearer Eugene. Their red color is visually connected with the red edging and the martyr’s mantle.
Will the colors of this icon fade over time?
The icon is painted with natural egg tempera and mineral pigments on a properly prepared gesso ground. With careful placement and normal icon care, these materials are intended for long-lasting color and stability.
How should an icon with tooled gold fields be cared for?
Do not wash the icon or use household cleaners. Dust should be removed only with a very soft dry brush. For long-term preservation, especially with relief gilding, a glazed wooden kiot is recommended.
