Theotokos of Vladimir Orthodox Icon is a hand-painted Orthodox icon of the Mother of God in the Eleusa, or Tenderness, type. It is one of the most moving and recognizable images of the Theotokos: the Mother and Child press their faces together in a gesture of love, compassion, and sorrow.
This version is richly decorated. The gold background, margins, and halos are covered with continuous hand chasing over 960 gold leaf, while the garments of the Mother of God are adorned with raised cold enamel details that imitate pearls and precious stones.
Available sizes: 17×21 cm (6.7×8.3 in), 20×24 cm (7.9×9.4 in), 27×31 cm (10.6×12.2 in), and 30×40 cm (11.8×15.7 in). The icon is suitable for a wedding blessing, family shrine, prayer for children, and long-term family inheritance.
The Spiritual Depth of the Vladimir Icon
The Vladimir icon of the Mother of God is not only an ancient and revered holy image. For many Orthodox Christians, it has become a symbol of motherly sacrifice, forgiveness, intercession, and all-embracing love.
Before this sorrowful and gentle gaze, princes, rulers, soldiers, and countless ordinary people have prayed for centuries. The icon was approached in national danger, family grief, sickness, and moments when deliverance seemed impossible.
The face of the Theotokos in the Vladimir icon is especially difficult to paint well. The iconographer must express tenderness and sorrow at once: the Mother loves her Son completely, yet foresees His suffering on the Cross.
Tradition of Saint Luke and the Journey to Rus
According to church tradition, the first image of the Vladimir Mother of God was painted by the holy Apostle and Evangelist Luke. The tradition also says that the board came from the table at which Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mary, and righteous Joseph shared meals.
The icon came to Rus in the early twelfth century, around 1131, as a precious gift from Byzantium to Prince Mstislav of Kyiv. At first, it was kept in Vyshgorod near Kyiv.
In 1155, Prince Andrei Bogolyubsky took the holy image with him while traveling toward the Rostov-Suzdal lands. According to tradition, the horses stopped and refused to continue. At that place the prince founded Bogolyubovo, and the icon was placed in the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir.
From that time, the image became known as the Vladimir icon.
The Protection of Moscow
The Vladimir icon became especially famous as a protector in 1395. The army of Tamerlane was approaching Moscow, and the city had little hope of resisting such a powerful invader.
The Vladimir icon was carried in procession from Vladimir to Moscow. As the people received the holy image with tears and prayer, Tamerlane saw a fearsome vision in his sleep: a radiant Woman surrounded by fiery angels commanded him to leave the Russian land.
Terrified by the vision, Tamerlane turned his army away without taking Moscow. In memory of this deliverance, the feast of the Meeting of the Vladimir Icon was established.
This history is one reason the icon is still loved as an image of protection, intercession, and hope in desperate circumstances.
The Eleusa or Tenderness Type
The Vladimir icon belongs to the iconographic type called Eleusa, often translated as Tenderness or Merciful. It is one of the most lyrical and emotionally profound types of icons of the Mother of God.
The main feature is the cheek-to-cheek contact of the Theotokos and Christ. They are not simply shown side by side; the Child clings to His Mother, and she holds Him with quiet sorrow.
This tenderness is not sentimental. Theologically, it speaks of the love of God for humanity, the love of Christ for the Church, and the mystical union of the soul with its Creator.
The icon reveals both maternal affection and the mystery of salvation. Love and sacrifice are inseparable in this image.
The Sorrowful Gaze of the Mother of God
The Mother of God does not look only at the Child. Her large, sorrowful eyes are turned toward the viewer, toward the person praying before the icon.
Her gaze carries the foreknowledge of Christ’s Passion. She knows that the Child embracing her neck will one day suffer on Golgotha for the life of the world.
At the same time, the Christ Child embraces His Mother as if consoling her. The icon therefore holds both the Cross and the Resurrection in one tender image.
The Visible Foot of Christ
One distinctive detail makes the Vladimir icon easy to recognize among other Eleusa icons, such as the Don or Korsun Mother of God: the left foot of the Christ Child is turned so that the sole is visible.
This small, touching detail has deep theological meaning. It emphasizes the reality of the Incarnation. The Son of God did not merely appear to be human; He truly became man, with a real human body.
The visible foot reminds the faithful that the eternal Word of God entered human life fully, in flesh and blood, for the salvation of the world.
The Garment of Christ
In this version, the Christ Child is clothed in a bright red himation. The garment is filled with fine gold lines known as assist.
These gold rays symbolize the uncreated divine light and the grace that shines from Christ. Even as a Child in His Mother’s arms, He is the eternal God, full of wisdom and divine authority.
The serious face and mature expression of Christ are also intentional. Orthodox iconography does not show Him as an ordinary infant, but as the pre-eternal Word made flesh.
Prayer Before the Vladimir Mother of God
Orthodox Christians pray before the Vladimir icon for reconciliation, healing of relationships, peace between spouses, softening of angry hearts, and the end of hostility among relatives.
As an image of profound maternal love, the icon is also approached in prayers for conception, safe pregnancy, childbirth, the health of children, and guidance of children on the right path.
Many people also pray before the Vladimir Mother of God for healing, especially in illnesses of the eyes and heart, and in times of deep emotional pain.
When a person must make a difficult decision, this icon is a natural place of prayer for clarity of mind and help in finding a faithful path through confusion.
Continuous Gold Chasing and Enamel Ornament
This hand-painted version is a rich work of sacred craftsmanship. The gold areas of the icon, including the margins, halos, and background in the kovcheg, are covered with 960 gold leaf.
Over the gold, the master creates a continuous relief vegetal ornament by hand with small metal tools. The gold is not left smooth; it catches the light in thousands of tiny facets and gives the icon the effect of a precious chased cover.
The maforion of the Mother of God is also highly decorated. Over the layered color, the icon painter applies fine ornament and many raised drops of cold enamel.
These enamel details imitate precious embroidery, pearls, rubies, and sapphires. They give the garment jewel-like richness while preserving the prayerful seriousness of the image.
Traditional Tempera Painting
The faces are painted in natural mineral egg tempera according to traditional icon-painting technique. A warm olive sankir, the base tone of the face, is gradually lightened with thin transparent layers.
This method gives the faces depth and a restrained inner luminosity. The expression of the Theotokos depends on the finest transitions of light, line, and color.
The icon is painted on a linden board prepared with kovcheg, linen, chalk gesso, and inserted oak splines. These materials are traditional and help the icon remain stable for long-term preservation.
Wedding Blessing and Family Shrine
The Vladimir icon is one of the traditional choices for a wedding blessing. Together with an icon of Christ Pantocrator, it may be used as part of a wedding pair.
It blesses a young family with prayer for strong love, healthy children, peace, fidelity, and mutual tenderness between husband and wife.
Because of its deep emotional and theological meaning, the icon is also well suited as a family heirloom, passed down from parents to children as a sign of faith and prayer.

Care and Preservation
An icon with relief chasing and enamel ornament should be protected from moisture, direct heat, direct sunlight, and careless touching. Do not wash it with water, wipe it with damp cloths, or use household cleaners.
Dust should be removed only with a very soft dry brush. Because of the gold and enamel detail, a glazed wooden kiot is recommended for long-term protection.
