Kazan Icon of the Virgin Mary is a hand-painted Orthodox image of Our Lady of Kazan, created as a solemn icon for family prayer, wedding blessing, and devotional use. This version is especially notable for its rich decorative treatment: a gilded kovcheg, tooled floral ornament, and wide fields painted in the style of old enamel work.
The Kazan Mother of God has been venerated for centuries as an image of maternal intercession, spiritual clarity, family protection, and consolation in sorrow. In this icon, the familiar Kazan composition is joined with the refined ornamental language of the Mstyora school.
The icon is painted on a solid linden board with inset oak braces, linen pavoloka, polished chalk levkas, mineral egg tempera, tooled 23K gold leaf, and a protective finish. Available sizes are 17×21 cm (6.7×8.3 in), 20×24 cm (7.9×9.4 in), 27×31 cm (10.6×12.2 in), and 30×40 cm (11.8×15.7 in).
History: Light from the Ashes
The history of the Kazan Icon tells how great sorrow was turned into joy. In 1579, soon after Kazan had been taken by the forces of Ivan the Terrible, a terrible summer fire devastated large parts of the city and filled many people with fear and despair.
On those still-smoking ruins, a miracle occurred. The Most Holy Theotokos appeared three times in a dream to a nine-year-old girl named Matrona, the daughter of the streltsy soldier Onuchin, commanding her to dig up her holy image at the place of their burned house.
Adults did not immediately believe the child. Only after her persistent requests did her mother begin to dig. About one meter deep, wrapped in an old sleeve of woolen cloth, the icon of the Mother of God was found, its colors bright and fresh, untouched by fire.
The icon was carried in procession to the parish church of St. Nicholas of Tula. During that first procession, led by the future Patriarch Hermogenes, two blind men, Joseph and Nikita, received their sight after venerating the image. This became a sign that the Kazan Mother of God brings not only physical healing, but spiritual illumination.
Intercessor in Orthodox Memory
The Kazan image entered Orthodox memory as a sign of protection in times of danger. In 1612, during the Time of Troubles, a copy of the Kazan icon was brought to the national militia led by Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky.
The people and soldiers prayed before the icon with fasting. On October 22 according to the old calendar, or November 4 according to the new calendar, Moscow was liberated. In memory of this deliverance, the autumn feast of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God was established.
For this reason, the Kazan icon is associated both with the protection of the faithful in public danger and with deeply personal prayer for family, children, marriage, sorrow, and spiritual guidance.
Iconography and Decorative Features
The Kazan icon belongs to the ancient Hodegetria type, meaning She Who Shows the Way. Unlike the Smolensk Hodegetria and other classical Byzantine versions, the Kazan image has a characteristic shoulder-length composition. The Mother of God is shown with a slight inclination of the head toward her Son, and Christ stands to her left facing forward, blessing with His right hand.
This makes the icon intimate and close, suitable for personal and family prayer. The face of the Virgin Mary is painted with deep yet luminous sorrow. Her large expressive eyes look toward the person praying, while her dark cherry maphorion is decorated with a rich border and eight-pointed stars of ever-virginity.
The Christ Child is clothed in a light blue chiton and a rose-red himation, with folds highlighted by gold assist. These gold lines signify the rays of divine energy and give the garments a solemn radiance.
The central kovcheg is covered with hand-tooled floral ornament on levkas and gilded with 23K gold leaf. The background shimmers like a precious metal covering. The wide fields are painted with blue, light blue, red, and black floral motifs on a light ground, imitating the effect of old hot enamel or cloisonne work.
Rows of delicate white dots, resembling small pearls, frame this enamel-style ornament. This decorative treatment gives the icon a palace-like solemnity and makes it suitable for a wedding pair, family shrine, or formal Orthodox gift.
Prayer Before the Kazan Virgin Mary
The Kazan Icon of the Virgin Mary is traditionally close to the daily needs of the faithful. It is a family icon, a wedding icon, an image of maternal protection, and a focus for prayer in difficult circumstances.
- For marriage: the Kazan icon is traditionally used in a wedding pair together with an icon of Christ Pantocrator.
- For healing: in memory of the first healings, the faithful pray for help in eye illness and for spiritual clarity.
- For children: mothers pray for children’s health, protection, good upbringing, and help in study.
- For consolation: the icon is approached in sorrow, family conflict, workplace hardship, and financial difficulty.
- For protection: the faithful pray for those in danger and for the safe return of loved ones.
Mstyora Technique and Materials
Creating such a richly decorated icon requires careful preparation and a high level of skill. The base is a well-dried linden board. Inset oak braces are placed into the back of the board to help prevent bending when humidity changes.
The front is covered with linen pavoloka and 10 to 15 layers of chalk levkas made from purified chalk and natural glue. After drying, the levkas is polished to a very smooth surface.
Before the painting stage, the ornament is carved or tooled into the ground. Then the central area of the board and the halos are gilded with 23K gold leaf. Genuine high-purity gold keeps its noble brightness and does not darken like imitation leaf.
The painting itself is made with mineral egg tempera, prepared from natural pigments such as ocher, cinnabar, lapis, and malachite on an egg-yolk emulsion. Tempera painting is valued for durability, depth of color, and its traditional church character.

Questions and Answers
What makes this Kazan icon different from other Kazan icons?
Its main distinction is the richly decorated fields. They are painted with complex blue-red floral ornament imitating old cloisonne-style enamel and framed with pearl-like white edging.
What is the iconographic type of this image?
The Kazan Icon belongs to the Hodegetria type, but in the Kazan shoulder-length version. The Mother of God is shown close to the faithful, and Christ stands beside her blessing with His right hand.
Is this icon suitable for a wedding pair?
Yes. The Kazan Icon of the Virgin Mary is a traditional choice for a wedding pair, usually matched with an icon of Christ Pantocrator in the same size and decorative style.
What do the stars on the Mother of God mean?
The eight-pointed stars on the maphorion of the Virgin Mary symbolize her ever-virginity: before, during, and after the Nativity of Christ.
What is tooled gold on levkas?
Before gilding, the ornament is carved or pressed into the levkas ground. It is then covered with 23K gold leaf, so the background catches the light like a precious metal covering.
Will the gold background darken over time?
The gilded background is made with 23K gold leaf. With proper care, high-purity gold does not oxidize like imitation metal leaf and keeps its warm brightness.
What prayers are offered before the Kazan Virgin Mary?
The faithful pray for peace in the family, protection of children, healing, spiritual clarity, consolation in sorrow, and help in difficult or dangerous circumstances.
Which size is best for a wedding gift?
The 27×31 cm size is a popular and harmonious format for a wedding blessing. It is large enough to show the tooled gold and enamel-style fields while fitting a home icon corner.
Is a wooden kiot recommended?
A glass-front wooden kiot is strongly recommended for long-term protection. It helps protect the board, painting, and delicate gold leaf from dust, candle soot, humidity changes, and scratches.
