The Vernicle Orthodox Icon
The hand-painted icon of the Holy Face is one of the most revered icons in Orthodoxy. It depicts the face of Jesus Christ, and the peculiarity of this icon is that, according to legend, it was not created by human hands.
According to legend, King Absalom, suffering from a serious illness, heard about the miracles of Jesus and sent his servant to him with a request to heal him. The servant brought with him a handkerchief to bear the image of Christ for the king. Jesus wiped his face with the handkerchief and left his image on it. This handkerchief was sent to the king, who, seeing the image, was healed.
The icon of the Savior of the Unsaved depicts the face of Christ, usually on a white or light background. The eyes of Christ are usually depicted as penetrating and full of mercy.
The icon of the Savior of the Non-Crucified represents divine mercy, salvation and judgment. Believers turn to this icon with prayers for forgiveness of sins, for help in difficult life circumstances and for healing of soul and body. It is a source of consolation, hope and salvation for the faithful.
The icon of the Savior of the Uncircumcised has a special place in the Orthodox faith and is an object of special veneration and worship. Its images are both in churches and in home iconostases. Believers turn to her with faith and hope for blessing and salvation, striving to imitate the teachings of Christ and ask for His intercession in their lives.
