Luke the New Stylite of Chalcedon Orthodox Icon
The Venerable Luke, the New Stolpnik was a soldier under the Byzantine emperor Constantine Porphyrogenitus (912-959). During the war with Bulgaria (917), by the Providence of God, St. Luke remained unharmed. After that he accepted monasticism and, excelling in his feats, was elevated to the dignity of presbyter. Aspiring to the highest stages of perfection, the Monk laid on himself the chains and stood on a pillar. After three years of standing by Divine suggestion he went to Mount Olympus, then to Constantinople and finally to Chalcedon, where he also chose a pillar on which he stood for 45 years, manifesting the acquired gift of miracle-working.
