In Orthodox tradition, the icon of St. Agatha depicts one of the first martyrs of the Christian Church, who lived in the 3rd century in Syria. Agapia came from a rich and noble family, but she renounced earthly goods and devoted herself to serving the poor and sick. As a result of persecution of Christians Agathya was arrested and severely tortured, but she did not renounce her faith and was executed.
The icon of St. Agathya is an object of veneration and prayer of believers who turn to her with requests for help in finding faith, strengthening spiritual life, protection from illness and hardship, as well as with gratitude for the graces received.
