Description

Venerable Sergius of Radonezh Orthodox Icon is a hand-painted image of the great Orthodox saint, monastic founder, spiritual elder, and teacher of humility. Saint Sergius is especially venerated as an intercessor for students, children, teachers, monastics, families, and all who seek spiritual strength, patience, and clarity of mind.

Iconography of Saint Sergius

In this icon, Saint Sergius is shown in full monastic vestments. He wears a dark monastic mantle and hood marked with crosses, with a red inner garment visible beneath the folds. His face is calm and serious, expressing the strictness of ascetic labor together with the mercy of a spiritual father.

The saint blesses with his right hand and holds an open scroll in his left hand. The scroll refers to his spiritual teaching and to the call for every Christian to seek the knowledge of God, the reading of Holy Scripture, repentance, and salvation. The composition is direct and prayerful, centered on the face, the blessing hand, and the written word of instruction.

Life of Venerable Sergius of Radonezh

Saint Sergius was born in 1314 in the Rostov region to the pious parents Cyril and Maria. At baptism he received the name Bartholomew. From childhood he desired prayer and the knowledge of God, yet he struggled with learning to read. According to his life, he met a holy elder in the field and asked him to pray that he might understand letters. The elder blessed him, gave him a small piece of prosphora, and from that time the boy was able to learn with ease.

After the death of his parents, Bartholomew withdrew with his brother Stephen to the forest of Makovets, where they built a cell and a small wooden church dedicated to the Holy Trinity. Stephen later left because of the severity of the wilderness life, but Bartholomew remained in solitude. In 1337 he received monastic tonsure with the name Sergius.

Other monks gradually came to live near him, seeking his guidance. From this small brotherhood grew the monastery that later became the Trinity Lavra of Saint Sergius. His life was marked by prayer, poverty, labor, simplicity, and fatherly love. He became a spiritual guide not through worldly power, but through humility and holiness.

Miracles and Spiritual Gifts

Orthodox tradition remembers Saint Sergius as a man filled with grace. Through his prayers the sick were healed, the troubled were comforted, and those who came to him received wise counsel. A spring appeared through his prayer when the monastery lacked water, and the faithful still remember this event as a sign of divine care.

One of the most revered events in his life is the appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos, who came to him with the Apostles Peter and John. She promised her protection over his monastery. This event strengthened the monastic community and became part of the spiritual memory of the Lavra.

Saint Sergius and Orthodox History

Saint Sergius had a profound role in the spiritual renewal of the people. He helped reconcile conflicts, called rulers to peace, and blessed Prince Dmitry Donskoy before the Battle of Kulikovo in 1380. His blessing was remembered not as political ambition, but as spiritual support in a time of great trial.

For Orthodox believers, Saint Sergius remains a saint of humility, prayer, obedience, learning, and quiet courage. His icon is therefore meaningful not only for historical devotion, but also for daily Christian life.

Hand-Painted Materials and Technique

This icon is painted on a linden wood board with inserted splines. The board has a kovcheg, the recessed central field traditionally used in Orthodox icon boards. It is prepared with pavoloka and chalk levkas, then painted in egg tempera. A protective varnish is applied after the painting is complete.

The icon follows the traditional hand-painted method: the board is prepared, the drawing is transferred, the main color areas are laid down, the face and hands are built gradually, and the inscriptions and final details are completed with care. The result is not a printed image, but a devotional icon painted for prayer and long-term use.

Prayerful Meaning and Use

Orthodox Christians pray before Saint Sergius for help in study, wise understanding, patience, humility, and spiritual renewal. Parents often ask his intercession for children who struggle with learning, distraction, or discouragement. Students and teachers may also keep his icon in a home prayer corner or study space.

This icon is suitable for a home icon corner, a chapel, a school prayer room, a monastery, or as a meaningful gift for a child, student, teacher, seminarian, or anyone named Sergius or Sergei.
