The Myrrhbearers Orthodox Icon: Witnesses of the Resurrection
The Myrrhbearers, or ‘Жены Мироносицы’ in Church Slavonic, hold a significant place in Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. These individuals, as mentioned in the New Testament, were directly involved in the burial and were the first to discover the empty tomb following the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The term ‘Myrrhbearers’ traditionally refers to the faithful women who arrived at Christ’s tomb early in the morning, bringing myrrh to anoint His body, only to find the tomb empty. This group also includes Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus, who took the body of Jesus down from the cross, anointed it with myrrh and aloes, wrapped it in clean linen, and placed it in a new tomb.
These women were followers of Jesus during his earthly ministry in Galilee, providing for him and his followers out of their own means. They remained faithful to him even during the most dangerous time of his arrest and execution. Not only did they stand by the cross, but they also accompanied him to his burial, noting where the tomb was located.
Due to the impending Sabbath, the burial preparations had to be brief. As per Jewish custom of the time, mourners would return to the tomb every day for three days. Once the Sabbath had passed, the women returned at the earliest possible moment, bringing myrrh to anoint the body. It was at this point that the Resurrection was revealed to them, and they were commissioned to go and tell the Apostles.
The icon of the Myrrhbearers serves as a reminder of their unwavering faith and devotion. It is a testament to their courage and the significant role they played in the events of the Resurrection. This icon is a powerful symbol of faith, love, and devotion, and it continues to inspire Orthodox Christians around the world.
