Description

Kazan Virgin Mary Orthodox Icon is a hand-painted Kazan icon of the Mother of God made as a richly ornamented Orthodox shrine. The image is placed in an arched kovcheg over 23K gold leaf (960 purity), with fine hand engraving on the gold and bright floral ornament on the broad margins.

This is a solemn, festive version of the Kazan icon. Its visual language is not minimal: the flowering border, ruby cartouche, jeweled garment detail, and gold assist turn the icon into a family relic and a distinguished spiritual gift.

The Kazan Icon Found in 1579

The history of the Kazan icon begins in 1579, after a great fire in Kazan. According to Orthodox tradition, the Mother of God appeared to the young girl Matrona and told her where the icon had been hidden in the ashes of her family’s burned home.

After the third vision, Matrona and her mother began to dig in the place shown to them. They found the icon wrapped in old cloth, untouched by the fire and shining with fresh colors.

The image was carried in procession, and the first miracles were remembered at once: two blind men, Joseph and Nikita, received their sight after venerating the icon. This is why the Kazan icon is also approached in prayer for the healing of bodily and spiritual blindness.

Protection in a Time of Trial

The Kazan icon became especially important during the Time of Troubles in the early seventeenth century. A copy of the icon accompanied the militia of Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitry Pozharsky as they prayed for the liberation of Moscow.

After fasting and prayer before the Kazan Mother of God, the Russian forces entered Kitay-Gorod on October 22, 1612, old style, remembered today on November 4. This history gave the icon a strong meaning of protection, courage, and prayer for peace.

Shoulder-Length Kazan Hodegetria

The Kazan icon belongs to the Hodegetria type, but in a shortened shoulder-length form. The hands of the Theotokos are not visible, so her face is brought close to the person standing before the icon.

Christ is shown at the side of the Mother of God, turned frontally toward the viewer. His right hand is raised in blessing, showing Him not only as the Child of Mary but as the eternal Lord who blesses the world.

The stars on the maforion of the Theotokos signify her ever-virginity before, during, and after the Nativity of Christ.

Floral Enamel-Style Margins and Arched Gold

The defining feature of this icon is its ornamental setting. The wide margins are painted with a dense multicolored floral pattern in blue, red, and light blue tones, with graceful curling stems. The effect recalls traditional Russian enamel, or finift, and gives the icon the feeling of a jeweled shrine.

The sacred figures are placed inside an arched kovcheg. The gold background within the arch is covered with 23K gold leaf (960 purity) and worked by hand with fine tsirovka, a delicate engraved pattern that catches the light around the halos.

At the lower part of the border is a ruby-colored cartouche with a gold Church Slavonic title naming the Kazan Most Holy Theotokos. The garments are further enriched with painted pearls, gemstone-like detail, and gold assist.

Prayer and Purpose

The Kazan icon is traditionally connected with marriage, the protection of the family, prayer for children, healing, help in grief, and protection in times of danger.

Because of its rich ornament and solemn presence, this version is well suited as an Orthodox wedding gift, a central home icon, a family relic, or a distinguished gift for a church, chapel, or prayer room.
